Your Subconscious is a Liar

When Michael Scott asks Toby, ‘Why are you the way that you are?’ on The Office, there’s actually probably a pretty simple answer.

His subconscious.

Sounds a little ‘out there’, right?

Well, once I figured out this little piece of the puzzle that is life, it changed the actual game for me.

Subconscious is defined as ‘of or concerning the part of the mind which one is not fully aware but which influences one’s actions and feelings’.

Ok. Got it.

So it’s what makes us do the things we do, and think the things we think... without even thinking about it.

The thoughts and actions that stem from our subconscious aren’t ‘good’ or ‘bad’ necessarily. They just are.

This conditioning of our minds is a result of mostly our environment and relationships.

Some examples of subconscious beliefs one may have?

-Religion. Yours is ‘correct,’ no matter what.

-Skinny is superior.

-Homosexuality is wrong.

-Your parents are always right.

-Men are superior to women.

-White privilege isn’t real.

-Asking for help is weak.

-Money is the ultimate goal.

-College makes you smart.

-Plastic surgery means you hate yourself.

Again. These aren’t necessarily right or wrong... they just are.

Now think of a time when maybe you butted-heads, or didn’t agree with someone’s stance on any of the aforementioned thoughts and beliefs.

Who is really wrong here?

Turns out? Nobody.

Your belief systems are just different. Most likely, it’s because a subconscious belief around a topic was ingrained in you before you even knew what was happening.

We are often taught these things with purely good intentions. Our parents pass on what they believe, and do their best.

But how many of us have actually deconstructed these beliefs, and decide what actually makes sense, and what doesn’t?

Or better yet- when disagreeing with someone on those hot topics, can you agree to disagree, knowing full well that they simply were raised with a different belief system than you?

We would stop being triggered, because we realize it’s not on us to change other people’s beliefs. It’s on us to know they may differ, and that’s ok.

And this is the super-important part...

**It’s our responsibility to look at our own brains on automatic pilot, and adjust the settings as needed.**

Our subconscious is there to protect us! But we also have these amazing thinking brains that can move us forward, instead of staying stuck in thought patterns that maybe aren’t true to us.

It’s a matter of trying.

And just simply trying? That’s Luxuriously Dope. 🖤
